爾格的窩

Carl Sandburg 桑德堡(1878–1967)生於伊利諾州，是瑞典移民後裔。

他是一位富有社會正義感的美國詩人。

當過農場工、洗碗工、記者、政黨組織者、市長秘書、民歌手，

也當過歷史學家、小說家、曾三次獲得普立茲獎。

其中兩次是詩歌，一次是寫【亞伯拉罕‧林肯】的傳記。

他的作品都較平民化，富有社會正義感。

Cross the hands over the breast here_ so

Straighten the legs a little more- so

And call for the wagon to come and take her home.

Her mother will cry some and so will her sisters and

      brothers.

But all of the others got down and they are safe and

      this is the only one of the factory girls who

      wasn’t lucky in making the jump when the

      fire broke.

It is the hand of God and the lack of fire escapes.

感想：

這首詩抨擊了資本家為了賺錢，

忽略保護工人的安全措施。

倒數第二行出奇的長，頗有一口氣要說出滿腹的

憤恨與不平的味道。

最後一行怪上帝的話當然只是反話與陪襯，

其目的是要指出太平梯及安全出口的不足。
