A Winter's  Tale             (by D. H. Lawrence)

冬日的故事

Yesterday the fields were only grey with scattered

      snow,

昨天原野上的雪才斑灰點點，

And now the longest grass-leaves hardly emerge;

此刻最長的草葉都難得露出，

Yet her footsteps mark the snow, and go

但她的腳印在雪上，往前

On towards the pines at the hill's  white verge.

走向白色山邊的松樹。

I cannot see her, since the mist's  pale scarf

我看不到她，因霧的灰巾

Obscures the dark wood and the dull orange sky;

遮住了黑樹林及單調的橙色天際；

But she's  waiting,I know, impatient and cold, half

但是她在等著，我知道，不耐且冷，

Sobs struggling into her frosty sigh.

微微的啜泣掙入她冰霜的嘆息。

Why does she come so promptly, when she must

     Know

為什麼她來得這麼快? 她總該明白

She's  only the nearer to the inevitable farewell?

她只是更接近那不可避免的訣別。

The hill is steep, on the snow my steps are slow---

山坡陡斜，在雪上我一步一步地挨

Why does she come, when she knows what I have to

     tell.

她為什麼要來，當她知道我要說的一切？

讀後感想：

    D. H. Lawrence 的生平與作品我們在以前就介紹過，

在此不再贅敘。

這篇詩文描寫出情人間最後的約會。

詩人使用一連串陰暗的字眼

(grey, snow, mist, pale, dark, dull, cold, sobs, struggling, frosty,

sigh, farewell, steep, slow)

營造出一個灰色凝滯的氣氛。

她明知道我要告訴她什麼，為什麼還要依約在那裡等待呢？

如果她不來多好，我就可避免這難堪的場面了。

但現在我不得不拖著這沉重的腳步，踩著厚雪、爬著斜坡

向那不可避免的一刻挨近。

糾纏的感情和難堪的分手是一件很遺憾的事，

個人認為保護自己和尊重別人才是最重要的。
